There are a few combinations of flowers that are deserving of the description “classic, elegant and understated but just beautiful” and this is one of them. A New England bride with a small intimate wedding held at a local restaurant recently ordered this bouquet:

Patti and Dustin were married in the Old Meetinghouse in Granville. The weather was spectacular which made the flowers simply glow and the conditions were prime for the photographer to capture the event to perfection. The flowers were designed by Lisa Greene AAF,AIFD,PFCI of Nunan Florist in Georgetown MA and the photographers were Cronin Hill based in North Hatfield MA.
The flowers used in the bouquets were mango calla lilies, roses in fall shades of orange from bright to burnt, hypericum berry, james storie , mokara orchids, gerbera daises with assorted grasses and seed heads.
I will just let my snapshots tell the story.

We are busy finalizing flowers for our fall weddings and just wanted to share some advice for our readers who are planning a fall wedding.
Roses: the most popular and romantic of all flowers, roses are available in a wide variety of colors. From creamy ivory into shades of yellow then the full range of orange and finally many shades of red. While this is the traditional fall palette there are also many pink, lavender and even mocha varieties to consider. Roses can be very affordable or they can be extravagant when you choose special cultivars such as David Austin roses.
Gerbera: there are hundreds of colors to choose from so you will find the perfect choice for your wedding. Fresh and fun, gerberas are at home in large dramatic arrangements as well as mini varieties in smaller presentations. Many brides name gerbera as their favorite flower.
Hydrangea: Full showy blossoms of hydrangea are beautiful in fall bouquets. Rich green blooms kissed with burgundy are words that don’t come close to how gorgeous antique green hydrangea are in real life. From cream, pink, blue, white and hybrid offerings there is a hydrangea for you. Pretty on their own or paires with other flowers hydrangea add a texture to bouquets that make them special.
Berries, Grasses and garden offerings: from hypericum to bittersweet, berries add the look and feel of the harvest. Grasses with interesting seed heads offer many choices to add texture to your bouquets. Garden offerings like the seed pods of poppies, sedum and flowering kale make the arrangements special.
Orchids: Fall orchids like mokara in yellows to orange to oncidium reminiscent of dancing butterflies. Dendrobium let you expand the palette to purple, lavender and white. The queen of the cut orchids are the phalanopsis, like a large moth, they are available in yellow, white, magenta and lavender. Orchids are showy and spectacular if you are looking for something special.
Chrysanthemum:are available as single daisy like blooms to full multi-petal or small pom-pom like flowers. Colors range from russet to burgundy, white, yellow and striking chartreuse green. The green poms are a beautiful compliment to the traditional fall colors.
Sunflowers: big and bright they lend themselves to garden inspired ceremonies. The North shore has beautiful, estates, barns and private homes that look exceptional when adorned with sunflowers. These striking blooms are beautiful with berries and grasses for a bountiful bouquet.
Carnations: available in rich colors, full and fragrant dianthus are perfect for incorporating into fall wedding bouquets. The carnations available today are not what you are used to. Shades of purple from Floragene, burgundy, bi-color cream and cranberry….these are not your mother’s carnations. Give them a chance you will not be sorry.
Lillie’s: there are two types of lily commonly used for weddings, Asiatic and Oriental. The Oriental are the ones with fragrance the Asiatic have no scent. Both are striking focal flowers that add a large star shaped bloom to bouquets.

It’s always nice to hear from Brides (and their mothers) after the wedding.
This wedding was a hybrid DIY and Nunans , We supplied the flowers for the family to make centerpieces and arrangements for the house and we created the bouquets, corsages and boutonnières.
Experience has shown us that this is the best way to go if you want to save on your budget but reduce the stress of creating the flowers to carry and wear. If you are planning on doing your own flowers I would suggest you create your design, calculate how many flowers you will need, draft a list and bring it to Nunans. We will give you a quote on the list, receive the flowers and condition them for you. The flowers can be delivered or picked up. On the day before the wedding create your arrangements and store them in a cool place. On the day of the wedding we will deliver the personal flowers and you can enjoy the day.
The following is a note sent by the mother of the bride:
I just wanted to send you a few pictures; the flowers were wonderful for Sasha and Mike’s July 3rd wedding. Thank you! Margie T.

Recently we helped a bride plan a surprise wedding. The groom knew he was getting married and to be dressed and ready for 12:00 on Friday. The bride called Nunans and set up a consultation to arrange the details. The day of the wedding we delivered the flowers to a local Bed and Breakfast. The groom came down from his room, the bride came down from hers, they got in the limo picked up the Justice of the peace and drove to the state park to exchange vows. It was very sweet! If you are not quite that relaxed about the planning and want a little more structure but lots of flexibility? The Garrison Inn in Newburyport offers Intimate & Elopement Wedding packages.
When it comes to flowers for your wedding you can choose your color scheme, let me know what flowers you love, and rest assured that you will have one of the best working for you.
Most of this can all be done by phone and email if you are not in the area. I am very familiar and comfortable working with couples from out of state. If you do plan a trip out after you have secured our services, we will be happy to arrange a time to meet with you in our shop, and go over more of the details, photos and vision.

Blue flowers are perennially popular with our North Shore brides and that popularity will not diminish in 2010. According to Lisa Greene AAF,AIFD, PFCI, ” Deep saturated blue will be high on bride’s wish lists in 2010.” Since flowers play a huge role in setting the theme, ambiance and colors of a wedding, Lisa Greene was asked her opinion on featuring blue flowers in a wedding.
Many ceremonies on the north shore revolve around an ocean or water theme. Natural, dark blue flowers can seem hard to find, but a great blue flower is the Volkenfrieden Delphinium, a beautiful shade of electric blue, other flowers that can come in shades of blue are blue hydrangeas, hyacinths, anemone, bachelor button, agapanthus, brodea and iris. The range of flowers can be increased if you choose to work with dyed flowers. If you do select dyed flowers, be very careful, dyes can stain fabrics and your hands. Greene tells us that dyed flowers should be handled by a professional floral designer so that an even color is achieved and distributed throughout your bouquets. Your florist will also advise you on precautions that should be taken.
Purchasing wedding flowers online is becoming more popular, if you order flowers there be sure to inquire whether the flowers you are ordering are natural or dyed blue. Be sure they provide information about whether dyes will seep or stain and how best to handle the blooms. If you use a local professional florist they will guide you through the process.
Lastly, I’ll end with a piece of advice from Nunan Florist. “Sometimes it’s nice to keep the flowers simple, pale yellow, white or ivory and bring in the blue color in through gems, baubles, feathers, ribbons or sheer fabric”. So if you’re a blue bride, you really do have a lot of options.
